Intralogistic innovation meets the elegance of wood

An automatic wooden warehouse of 3,000 square meters, 21 metres high, in the green heart of South Tyrol. Automha, a Bergamo-based company leader in the design, production and installation of cutting-edge automatic storage and picking solutions, has designed a green and ecological automatic warehouse with a completely wooden structure for the South Tyrolean company Rothoblaas. This company is a multinational leader in the development and supply of solutions with high technological content for the building sector.

The agreement between the two companies resulted in a totally original project: the construction of a warehouse with racks completely made of wood, the first and only example on the entire Italian territory.

The strategic objective of Rothoblaas is to reorganize its warehouse, in order to optimize the available resources and to ensure excellent management of internal and external logistics.

It’s not a coincidence that the company of Azzano San Paolo was chosen: “We have received different proposals from both national and foreign suppliers – said Robert Blaas, CEO of the company of Cortaccia, in the province of Bolzano – but among all of them, Automha’s innovative system and proven technical skills struck us the most”.

With 185 collaborators, two production sites (Italy and China) and six commercial offices (Italy, India, Spain, Canada, USA and Mexico) Automha has proven, once again, its versatility and flexibility, adapting to the client’s needs and proposing an innovative system, confirming its position as an ideal partner in the choice of intralogistic solutions.

We are talking about the installation of a self-supporting warehouse consisting of four stacker cranes, particular robots used in these structures, to move four different types of pallets of as many different sizes and measures, with a maximum weight of the load unit of 1,000 kg.; a specific ground conveyor system and the management of Automha’s WMS software interconnected with the factory itself. This solution was designed specifically for the characteristics of the company, especially due to the selectivity of the warehouse.

Automha’s project is the best both in technical terms and in terms of environmental impact. In fact, the R&D department of the Bergamo company has studied and designed a sustainable warehouse, entirely in wood. The ideal solution to meet the needs of a constantly growing company, which predicts a very high development and strong territorial expansion by 2025. The warehouse of the Rothoblaas headquarters will act as a hub for the 22 subsidiaries located around the world, guaranteeing rapid sorting of goods in order to satisfy the increasing demand for fast and efficient logistics.

That of wood as a material was a strategic and accurate choice. In fact, a system of this type offers the client numerous advantages: the possibility of positioning the beams at the desired height, the reduction of deformations with full sections and comparable spaces, the superior fire resistance when compared to steel structures and, finally, lightness and ease of installation. “Wood is a living material, which transmits heat and energy. Our goal is to distinguish ourselves from the others, and even on this occasion we have not betrayed our nature” said Robert Blaas.

“The first automated warehouse with wooden racks in Italy is an important development project for the entire country, especially in a complex period like this. We are proud of being the first ones to propose such an advanced and revolutionary solution, the most sustainable innovation in our sector to date” said Gianni Togni, Vice President of Automha.
