San Giorgio began in the eighties in a small pastry factory in Castel San Giorgio, near Salerno. In the past 35 years, the company has grown to become a leading company on the national and international food service market.
The customer and his needs, in a continuously changing market, continue to be San Giorgio’s priorities. The company diligently works to update its product range and improve the quality of its services.
San Giorgio focusses its attention not only on latest generation production and conservation systems, which form the basis of the company’s continuous growth, but also on its internal logistics, which are designed to maintain a service that is efficient and lives up to its reputation.
To do this it trusted in Automha, which, thanks to its competence in the frozen sector, immediately proved to be the ideal partner.
Storage in the frozen sector involves compliance with specific requirements including: high storage density, energy efficiency, reduced production times and minimum margins of error during the picking and delivery of orders, as well as the requirement to maintain 24-hour cold chain compliance. And all this at extreme temperatures. In addition, the goods stored in the warehouse are perishable and require highly efficient levels of traceability.
San Giorgio wanted to increase the storage capacity of its warehouse by expanding vertically and make it more efficient by automating all management flows of the finished product without compromising any of the specific characteristics of the sector.
Automha analysed the customer’s request, and designed and created a warehouse that extended seven metres below ground, with a temperature of -25°C.
The pallets containing the finished product packages are taken by a robot on an external island to the warehouse and directed to the cold storage rooms using a handling system together with a lift that transfers them below ground. The same system is used to pick the pallets in the warehouse and take them to the ground floor where conveyors direct them to an area dedicated to loading.
Handling inside automatic warehouse for the frozen sector is managed by Autosatmover, a fully automated modular system for storing multi-depth pallets, and Supercap, an on-board satellite controlled by a mother shuttle via Wi-Fi, intended for operations in the various storage channels for the automatic picking/depositing of pallets.
The San Giorgio automatic warehouse for the frozen sector holds over 1,400 loading units, each with maximum dimensions of 800x1200x2200m.
The customer was extremely satisfied with the result: in a short time the automated storage systems implemented by Automha allowed the customer to optimize costs and rationalize processes, thereby increasing the efficiency of the service offered to its customers.
In addition, San Giorgio significantly increased its storage capacity without at the same time having to make costly investments in terms of purchasing other buildings or land, capitalizing instead on the already existing warehouse.
It should be noted, however, that the industrialization of processes has not affected the quality of the products, which have maintained their appearance and genuine, wholesome flavours, while respecting traditions.
